Chelsey Pettyjohn

Chelsey Pettyjohn is a multidisciplinary artist working primarily in paint, sculpture, and collage. Driven by a need to create personal mythology, her work engages a specific collection of self-made archetypes and iconography. Themes reveal personal history: childhood fantasies, forbidden sexuality, the secrecy of inner worlds. She is interested in the juxtaposition of delicate and grotesque; articulating the human experience in all its ugliness, innocence, beauty, and brutality.

She holds a BFA in Illustration from Parsons the New School for Design, and a BA in Creative Writing from Eugene Lang College of Liberal Arts. She has shown her work locally and internationally; exhibitions include solo and two-person shows at Wharfside Arts, ATLA, ChaShaMa, Thomas Hunter Projects and Tennis Elbow; group shows at Superhouse, Noon Projects, TIWA Gallery, Kapp Kapp, Tiger Strikes Asteroid, and Foxy Production. Artist residencies include Hunter College (2019-2020, New York NY), Portland Pottery (2021, Portland ME), Salmon Creek Farm (2022, Albion CA), Brisons Veor (2024, 2025, Cornwall UK), Createspace Wales (Wales, 2025). She currently lives and works in Red Hook, Brooklyn.
