Who we are
First Year Contemporary was founded in 2025 by Sara Harari and Lindsey Friedman, longtime friends who first met while studying art history at Queen’s University in Ontario, Canada. After parallel careers in galleries, museums, and auction houses across New York, Toronto, and London—as well as forays into law and entrepreneurship—they reunited to return to what they love most: art.
Our gallery is dedicated to presenting compelling contemporary art in an accessible and dynamic way. Through online exhibitions, curated in-person shows, and exclusive limited editions, we connect new collectors with thought-provoking works by artists from diverse backgrounds and perspectives.
We believe that collecting art should feel welcoming, transparent, and inspiring—not intimidating. Our goal is to make space for curiosity and conversation, where emerging artists can grow and new audiences can discover work that resonates deeply.
Unlike traditional galleries, First Year Contemporary does not represent artists. Instead, we embrace a project-based model that gives artists the freedom to experiment while allowing us to showcase a wide range of voices, styles, and ideas. This fluid approach means our programming can respond to artistic innovation, cultural dialogues, and the evolving needs of collectors.
We are especially committed to accessibility, transparency, and the joy of connecting people with art. Whether you are an emerging artist, a first-time buyer, or a seasoned collector, First Year Contemporary is here to be your resource and your entry point into a vibrant conversation.
